The Role
We’re seeking an experienced CTO to take ownership of our technical vision and execution. You’ll be joining as the first in‑house, full‑time technical leader, building on the foundation established by our fractional CTO and outsourced technical team, and will be responsible for architecting, building, and scaling our mobile‑first platform as we launch and grow.
This is a hands‑on role where you’ll spend significant time writing code while also providing technical leadership, making architectural decisions, managing an external engineering team, and eventually building and managing an internal engineering team.
Key aspects of the role:
· Serve as a true technical partner to the founders, with decision‑making authority.
· Balance immediate product needs with long‑term technical vision and scalability.
· Be willing to roll up your sleeves and handle everything from database optimization to user support when needed.
· Help define and evolve our technical culture as we grow from startup to scale‑up.
What You’ll Do
· Own the technical roadmap and architecture for our platform.
· Build and maintain our full‑stack application across web and mobile.
· Develop and optimize our AI agent systems for daily content and group facilitation.
· Implement and scale our custom video‑chat infrastructure using LiveKit.
· Design and maintain secure, HIPAA‑compliant, scalable backend systems and APIs.
· Make key decisions about our technology stack, infrastructure, and development processes.
· Collaborate closely with the founding team on product strategy and user experience.
· Establish engineering best practices, testing strategies, and deployment pipelines.
· Build and lead the engineering team as we scale.
· Partner with founders on strategic business decisions, fundraising, and company direction.
· Make pragmatic trade‑offs between speed, quality, and technical debt in our early‑stage environment.
· Establish technical KPIs and metrics to guide engineering decisions.
· Mentor and develop team members while maintaining your own technical contributions.
Our Tech Stack
· Frontend: TypeScript – Next.js, React, Capacitor/Cordova (or similar), React Native
· Backend: FastAPI (Python), PostgreSQL
· AI/ML: Agno (agent orchestration), LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), STT/TTS (Whisper, ElevenLabs, Cartesia, AssemblyAI)
· Real‑time Communication: LiveKit (video chat and AI agent voice communication)
· Infrastructure: Google Cloud Platform, Terraform
What We’re Looking ForRequired
· 10+ years of software engineering experience with increasing technical leadership.
· Expert‑level proficiency in Python for backend development and AI agent orchestration.
· Expert‑level proficiency in TypeScript and modern web and mobile frameworks including React, React Native, and Next.js.
· Strong understanding of full‑stack architecture, API design, and database modeling.
· Experience building and deploying production applications at scale.
· Proven ability to ship products quickly in resource‑constrained environments.
· Strong product intuition and user empathy – you build what humans actually need.
· Experience making tough technical decisions with incomplete information.
· Genuine interest in and familiarity with the psychedelics space.
Highly Valued
· Experience with AI/LLM integration and agent orchestration frameworks.
· Experience with real‑time communication systems (WebRTC, LiveKit, or similar).
· Background in building social or community‑oriented platforms.
· Experience with voice AI and conversational interfaces.
· Track record of technical leadership in early‑stage startups.
· Understanding of privacy, security, and ethical considerations in sensitive wellness applications.
· Previous experience as a founding engineer, early technical hire, or startup CTO.
· Experience with technical due diligence and investor communications.
· Track record of building engineering teams from 1‑2 to 10+ engineers.
