The NM Department of Health's Center for Medical Cannabis and Psilocybin works to enroll patients in the Medical Cannabis Program and in the Medical Psilocybin Program while ensuring compliance with statute, rules, and regulations regarding enrollment. The Center for Medical Cannabis and Psilocybin educates individuals, community partners, law enforcement, judiciary, and other partners regarding the use and effects of cannabis and psilocybin. The Center gathers and compiles statistics on patient use and access. The Center also creates, reviews, and revises the rules and regulations pertaining to the programs.

Why does the job exist?

The Medical Director will help with a wide range of projects in the medical cannabis and psilocybin programs, including but not limited to forming relationships and educating providers and the medical community about the use of medical cannabis and psilocybin. The position will be responsible for interacting with Medical Cannabis Advisory Board, the Public Health and Safety Committee, and the Medical Psilocybin Advisory Board. This will include assisting in the recruitment for vacant positions. The Medical Director will provide input and recommendations on proposed regulatory and statutory changes based on research and reviews of best practices. The position reviews patient applications to determine eligibility for enrollment in the medical cannabis program. The position will develop and review protocols for the medical psilocybin program.

How does it get done?

The position is responsible for keeping up to date on emerging information and research in the fields of medical cannabis and medical psilocybin, including conditions and treatments which may benefit from the use of medical cannabis or psilocybin. The incumbent must be able to take complex medical, statutory and regulatory information and make it easy to understand for a wide range of audiences.  The Medical Director will work with the Center's health education program to create, review, and provide feedback regarding the program's outreach and educational material. The medical director will assist in creating and reviewing the rules, regulations, and protocols for the programs.

Customers include Center for Medical Cannabis and Psilocybin patients, providers, the general public, coworkers, law enforcement agencies, community partners, other state agencies, and internal Department of Health partners.

Minimum Qualification

Requires an MD, licensure and certification to practice in New Mexico and two (2) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.  Defensive Driving Certificate.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. In-state and out-of state travel may be required. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
