Production Manager (Tax Manager) – Cannabis & Psychedelics-Focused Accounting Firm

Join a fast-growing, progressive team shaping the future of tax advisory in high-growth industries.

About Us

Calyx CPA LLC is a boutique tax and accounting firm specializing in the unique needs of plant medicine companies. It offers comprehensive business consulting, entity advisory, tax planning, and tax preparation services to companies across the U.S.

We’re based in southern Oregon, but we have remote staff and clients located across the U.S. We’re a friendly group of about 18 individuals (and growing fast) and we value integrity, advocacy, commitment, and care for both our clients and teammates.

Our organizational structure is a little different from traditional public accounting firms. We refer to it as a deep and narrow structure. Rather than by breaking out into departments like tax and bookkeeping it’s broken out into teams. Each team is a fully independent unit and each team manages about $1.2-1.5 million in fees. A team includes a Client Manager (CM), Production Manager (PM), and typically two tax preparers and two bookkeepers.

We are not a high volume low-cost provider. Our focus is on a high level of service and accuracy which enables us to service fewer clients and charge a bit more than our competitors.

The Opportunity

The Production Manager (PM) role is technical heavy and requires strong organizational and leadership skills, as well as technical skills. You are essentially the hub of the production team and you are the strongest on the team in technical topics. You are the intermediary between the Client Manager (CM) and the preparers. You are responsible for ensuring that projects are completed in a timely manner with a high level of completeness and accuracy. You are able to get into the weeds on complex projects and sometimes messy bookkeeping. You are very organized, disciplined and accountable in managing schedules. You are able to support your team with training as necessary by providing detailed review points. You understand that as you build up your team it makes your work easier and better. You are able to communicate well internally with your team as well as externally with clients when it comes to requesting information and clarification on certain issues.

Ultimately, it is your responsibility to provide completed projects to the Client Manager that require minimal additional review and are free of errors and omissions. The role does not require substantial communication with the client. Client communications are generally related to information gathering. Sometimes you can sit in on client meetings to support the Client Manager with technical information.

In terms of temperament, you prefer working on projects and getting work done to communicating with clients.

We’re looking for someone who is already seasoned and can ‘hit the ground running’ and really brings a high level of experience and technical ability. While we provide training and support, we are looking for someone who has already dealt with complex tax and bookkeeping and who has managed preparation schedules and staff; someone who feels confident that he or she can take the reins of a small production team and start adding value right away.
