Job Summary:
The Research Specialist will be a member of the PROTEA (Program for Research, Outreach, Therapeutics, and Education in the Addictions) research team in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. This position will work directly with study team members and research subjects in trials led by Drs. Randy Brown and Christopher Nicholas. Current projects include human subjects research involving patients with diagnoses such as Opioid Use Disorder. Previous trials have worked with patients with Methamphetamine Use Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Treatment Resistant Depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. These clinical trials have been both industry sponsored and Investigator-initiated. Some projects may involve the use of novel, investigational treatments and have included supervised administration of MDMA, and 5MEO-DMT. There will also be the opportunity to train on health implementation research, focusing on risk assessments and prevention in patients experiencing opioid use disorder and other use disorders.
The Research Specialist will primarily be responsible for scheduling and conducting study visits, data collection, and follow-up with study participants for one of our clinical trials. The Research Specialists on our team communicate with sponsors regularly to ensure complete data entry, collaborate closely with regulatory personnel to ensure compliance of clinical trials, and work as a unit with clinical research staff and other professionals to ensure participant safety, study compliance, and overall ease of following protocols.
Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
- 30% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
- 5% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
- 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
- 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
- 20% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
- 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports
- 10% Collaborates closely with other research specialists and lab staff to ensure oversight of all research studies
- 10% Recruits study participants and manages their study participation, including scheduling visits, obtaining informed consent, enrollment, data collection and quality monitoring, and monitoring of study sessions for consistency.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Experience using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn new software tools
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and interact professionally with study participants, external collaborators, and diverse stakeholders
- At least 1 year of participant or patient-facing experience (either in healthcare, research, or a related field)
Preferred:
- A minimum of 1 year of research experience strongly preferred (medical, social science, addiction or related care, and/or healthcare)
- Experience using quantitative data bases and experience entering, analyzing, and reviewing data (REDCap, Qualitrics, etc)
- Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to work independently, delegate, and oversee tasks
- Ability to work with co-located and remote teams and communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams
- Ability to follow research protocols or other detailed procedures consistently and accurately, with a high level of attention to detail
- Specific knowledge in addiction medicine, psychedelic research, or experience in complex clinical trials
- Knowledge of how to handle complex mental health care, crises, or overdose-related prevention and education
- Knowledge of FDA regulated research or clinical trials

The starting salary for the position is $50,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
